Truro

From whichever direction you approach it, Truro has a feeling of light and openness. As you drop down one of the wide roads towards the centre, you will see the river and the quays which are evidence that Truro was once a thriving port.

Truro Cathedral
Truro Cathedral

The heart of the city is the Cathedral. Work started here in 1880 and although the architect, John Pearson, had received instructions not to make copies of any particular existing cathedral, it was felt that he should try and embody the spirit of the medieval buildings and not to incorporate more modern concepts.

Unlike many of the medieval cathedrals which had spacious grounds around them and therefore afforded magnificent views of their whole fronts, Truro was to be in a much more confined space and it was important therefore that the views should be considered as rising above existing buildings rather than be on ground level. Truro Cathedral extends a warm welcome to visitors. There are guided tours every day throughout the season, as well as booked tours for groups. It has a well-stocked shop for gifts and souvenirs and a very popular restaurant housed in the Chapter House.

Located in the heart of Truro, award winning restaurant Chantek offers an exciting menu of authentic Thai and south east Asian cuisine. Beautiful decor, a lively atmosphere and friendly staff all combine to ensure that it has established itself as one of the top restaurants in Cornwall.

Experience the excitement of an open kitchen as you watch chefs prepare sumptuous dishes right in front of you. Quality ingredients, freshly cooked, are at the heart of Chantek's cuisine. Meat and poultry are sourced from Cornish suppliers and Head Chef Chai Yot cooks up innovative dishes with the best of local fish on the daily specials board.

Chantek has recently launced its own range of cooking sauces and ready meals, freshly prepared,  blast frozen and delivered straight to your door along with a range of its own-label wines which compliment the food perfectly. Check out the range on their website

Chantek is perfectly located for a pre-theatre meal and a reasonably priced lunch menu offers diners quick and healthy meals. The first floor is ideal for private functions or larger group bookings.

Become a member at www.chantek.co.uk and win a meal for two and take advantage of our special offers. Open daily for dinner, 6 - 11pm and for lunch Monday to Saturday, 12 - 3pm.

Tucked away in Truro's Nalder's Court lies Opium, a French style boutique offering a unique collection of clothing, gifts and accessories, most of which are exclusive to Cornwall. Opium is unlike anything you will find on the high street with it's antiquated feminine charm and focus on quality and style.

Collections found at Opium include: Avoca Anthology, Day Birger et Mikkelsen, Marilyn Moore, Odd Molly and Paige denim. As well as an array of unusual giftware, jewellery and accessories.

When visiting Truro make sure you find your way to Opium to view the stunning collection of fashions and fripperies!
