Fowey to Lerryn

For the small boat sailor, as well as the yachtsman, Fowey estuary, over the other side of Gribbin Head, must rank amongst the favourite playgrounds in the country. Although the main channel is frequently busy with shipping of all sizes, its creeks and coves make ideal places to explore.

Fowey has all the atmosphere of a gracious Victorian resort, with good hotels and restaurants, but its narrow streets and lovely waterfront retain much of the character that it had years ago when it was a major trading port. At the mouth of the estuary, but only an easy walk from the town, you will find Ready Money Cove, a sheltered spot with a sandy beach where the family can relax.

Situated at the tidal reach of the river Fowey in a beautiful wooded valley, the town of Lostwithiel is a haven of peace and tranquillity with the river meandering through its centre. Antique shops, regular fairs and auctions have made it the antiques capital of Cornwall.

Along with a choice of recently opened lifestyle shops, award winning restaurants, tea rooms and traditional pubs, Lostwithiel has something for everyone to enjoy.

The name ‘Lostwithiel’ comes from two old Cornish words meaning ‘the place at the tail end of the woodland’, and looking down the valley from Restormel Castle one can see how it came by this fascinating name.

The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery is just a mile from the town. Selling mainly plants, it is the first port of call for serious gardeners, public and private, in this part of the county.

As well as a formidable range of mainstream garden plants including trees, shrubs, perennials and fruit, it has, in Camellias, Fuchsias and Conifers, the sort of depth you would normally find only in a specialist nursery. There is also a very fine choice of horticultural and related books, Duchy Originals products and gifts.

About three miles south of Lostwithiel, you will find a hidden gem on a tributary of the River Fowey, the beautiful village of Lerryn. Named after the river that flows through it and down to Fowey, Lerryn nestles peacefully amongst beautiful woodland. The ebb and flow of the tide creates an idyllic riverside location. At high tide the dominant feature is the medieval bridge, whilst at low tide, the stepping stones further downstream become the focal point, a delight to children and adults alike.

Lerryn River
Lerryn

The Ship Inn Lerryn is at the heart of this beautiful village. It is a welcome haven for the thirsty and hungry and has a varied and wholesome menu plus a wide range of Cornish real ales, local cider and wine by the glass or bottle. When weather permits, barbequed food is also available.

Featured in ‘The Good Pub Guide 2008’ and voted in ‘The Independent’s Top 50 Inns of Britain’, The Ship Inn also offers quality accommodation: five B&B rooms and two nearby cottages. Activities are organised throughout the year such as quizzes, themed food nights and music events and the pub plays host to two major river events, the Seagull Race and the Summer Solstice.

During busy seasons, the pub is open all day for food. Booking is preferred, as large parties are catered for arriving by river, or just exploring the wonderful network of local walks.
