Truro - Catherdral City

The Royal Cornwall Museum is Cornwall’s oldest and most prestigious museum and most worthy of a visit. The Grade II building which has housed the RIC since 1919 was built in 1845 as the Truro Savings Bank, and subsequently became Henderson’s Mining School.

During your stay in Cornwall why not visit Truro’s famous Cheese Shop? A family run business, it is noted for its wide selection of Cornish, national and international cheeses, many of which are artisan and sourced direct from the farm producers. To ensure the highest quality, cheeses are cellar stored and matured, then cut fresh to your specific requirements. To complement the cheeses, you will also find locally produced charcuterie, chutneys and relishes as well as wines and, during the summer, delicious organic ice cream. So whether it’s a hamper, selection box, picnic provisions or a portion of your favourite cheese to take home, The Cheese Shop is certainly worth a look!

Opening hours are: Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to 4pm.

Award-winning Artisan Cookshop in the heart of Truro, was voted ‘Best Cookshop 2007’ in the ‘Britain’s Best Retailers’ awards and ‘Best Newcomer’ to the houseware industry in 2007, by the Cookshop & Housewares Association. A family run business with 14 years experience it offers a comprehensive range of quality cookware, barware and dining ware.

Situated at the Top end of Pydar Street in a Georgian listed building you will find, spread over two floors, a product range that includes Emma Bridgewater pottery, Kitchenaid mixers and coffee machines, Porsche Knives, Jamie Oliver cookware, Dualit and much more. Alongside their quality ranges they aim to offer you expert advice and a first class service, including mail order and shop & drop. For all your culinary needs, Artisan Cookshop really is the place to visit.

Take a few steps from Truro’s busy streets into Charlotte’s Tea House and you enter the sanctuary of Victorian tranquillity with waitresses in period costumes offering an assortment of homemade cakes. This award-winning gem of a teashop is a magnet for tourists, but loved by locals too.

The attention to detail - from the Victorian-dressed waitresses to the china cups, antiques, chandeliers and tinkling old music - adds to the charm. All the scones and cakes are home-made and cooked on the premises. Local produce and ingredients are used as far as possible to give you that unique taste of Cornwall. Fresh coffees, lunches, high tea and traditional Cornish cream tea can all be enjoyed, along with speciality teas that include ‘Tregothnan’ English Estate Tea, grown just outside Truro and available to take home.

The whole Tea House is decorated in a Victorian style and has good views of the Cathedral and cobbled square from some of the tables, especially if you are able to sit at the large table set in the central bay window. The Tea House is on the first floor of Coinage Hall standing at one end of the main square.

Just outside Truro, in the beautiful village of Malpas, right on the estuary, you will find the Heron Inn. The Pub is blessed with one of the best views in Cornwall, overlooking the confluence of the Truro and Tresillian Rivers and their wooded foreshores. At Lunch times the large front patio is a glorious suntrap and an ideal setting to watch the nesting Herons and Egrets across the river.

The Heron Inn offers an excellent range of homemade, locally sourced dishes cooked to order.
